Nurtured Home Shoppe: From Ideation to Market at 51 Years Old

When I first met Kate, founder of Nurtured Home Shoppe; she was travelling the world, working in Fashion and as a yoga teacher. She came to me seeking my help for a clear and efficient action plan to bring her home decor store to market during an economically challenging time. Simultaneously, we worked on building the foundation for her business to grow from and addressing the many fears and limiting beliefs that come along with challenging your comfort zone and taking a major career risk.

A pivotal point in the successful launch of her store was clearly identifying her role and skill-set within the business and building out a small team to fill the gaps, ensuring sustainable growth for the company. From there, designing the architecture of her business to lay the foundation for her big vision and current personal and business goals. 

I recently sat down with Kate, Nurtured Home Shoppe's owner to hear her learnings and insights on changing her career at 51 and creating her dream home decor store, here's what she had to say:

Can you share a little about your background and why you started your business?

I've been in the home industry since I was 21 years old, having built and designed many homes. I opened the shoppe with the intent to be able to create a beautiful place to find thought and inspiring home decor as I wasn’t able to find it in Kelowna's current home decor stores.

What do you love most about working in your business?

I love reimagining spaces - assisting someone in putting together a space that truly reflects their needs and wishes for their home.

Can you share one thing you’ve learned while starting or running your business?

One thing! That’s hard but I would say learning I'm much more capable than I give myself credit for.

Can you share a limiting belief you challenged and overcame while starting Nurtured Home Shoppe?

That starting a business at 51 is more than achievable. You can push the limits on every aspect (financially, geographically & economically) and still sleep at night and feel so fulfilled opening the door to your business every morning.

You are such a great example of someone pursuing their potential, how do you stay motivated and disciplined to keep moving forward?

By surrounding myself with people who are passionate and willing to be different in an industry that often likes to play it safe and on trend. 

Motivation for me is experience and staying on track. I don’t deviate from my style, I don’t get on the trend train.  I search for design that has roots and is classic. 

Moving forward again by surrounding myself with others that want to live this lifestyle, this ability to live with less and want more out of the experience of having such thoughtful and beautiful things around them.
